Description

The Alberta Crop Report provides timely provincial and regional summaries of crop production in Alberta during the crop season, and is used by industry and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments. The report is also used to validate some of the Alberta crop estimates generated by Statistics Canada. Data for the report is collected through regular surveys on moisture and crop conditions, progress of seeding and harvesting, insect and disease situation, yield potential and crop quality, etc., along with information from other sources. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) has delivered the Alberta Crop Reporting Program to clients since 1940.

Description

Official greenfeed and silage production statistics for Alberta are not available from Statistics Canada or any other source, despite the fact that producers in the province harvest significant acreages of annual crops for greenfeed and silage every year. To fill this data gap and meet client needs, the Statistics and Data Development Section of Alberta Agriculture and irrigation (AGI) initiated a greenfeed and silage production survey in 2002. Since then, the survey has been conducted annually to develop selected statistics for the forage industry. This survey is conducting in partnership with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). The survey collected data on greenfeed and silage acreage, yields and production at the municipal level. The information was then used, along with input from AF specialists, to develop provincial estimates. Just to note, the yield and production estimates in this report are on a wet weight basis.

In Alberta, the loggerhead shrike is considered to be a Species of Special Concern. Since 1987, a prairie-wide roadside survey has been conducted every five years to monitor populations. This report summarizes results of the 2019 survey conducted in Alberta, and compares results with surveys conducted in 1987, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013.

The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is arguably Alberta’s most “at risk” species. Monitoring of sage-grouse in Alberta has been sporadic since it began in 1968. However, since the species decline was documented in the mid-1990s a concerted effort has been made to monitor the population each spring. This report summarizes results of the lek counts conducted in 2023.

The ferruginous hawk is a large raptor within the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta, inhabiting areas dominated by native prairie. It is currently listed as an Endangered species under Alberta’s Wildlife Act. The provincial ferruginous hawk population has been estimated every five years since 1982, except between the years 1993 and 1999. This report presents the findings of the 2022 survey.

Represents the findings of an annual survey of multi-family dwellings in Alberta's rural communities, conducted by the Government of Alberta between the months of May and August each year. The survey identifies building type, unit type, number of units, rental rates and the number of vacancies in Alberta communities with populations between 1,000 and 9,999 that have at least 30 or more rental units. The survey report is recognized as the only official and unbiased rental housing cost and vacancy information for rural Alberta. It provides the provincial government, housing industry, municipalities, and various other entities with essential housing information on private market vacancy and rental rates in multi-family dwellings in rural Alberta.
