Description

The Government of Alberta is committed to ensuring waged, non-family farm and ranch workers have similar protections to those in other sectors and other Canadian provinces. Enacted in December 2015, Alberta’s Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act was the first step in this process. The Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act, passed in June 2017, included specific changes to the Employment Standards Code to apply it to farms and ranches.

This handbook is an introduction to the fundamental rights and responsibilities employers and workers have when it comes to occupational health and safety on Alberta farms and ranches. It explains what both groups need to do to be in compliance with the OHS Act and Regulations. It also provides examples of some of the more common hazards on a farm or ranch setting, and what can be done to help keep everyone healthy and safe on the job.

The Government of Alberta is committed to ensuring waged, non-family farm and ranch workers have similar protections to those in other sectors and other Canadian provinces.
