Description

The guidelines presented here for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections in Alberta have been adapted from the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections for provincial use with permission from the Public Health Agency of Canada. It includes the level of recommendation and quality of evidence indicators for the treatment recommendations. The indicators reflect a combination of the methodologies from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care and have been modified and simplified for use.

The guidelines were developed by Alberta Health with input and advice from medical officers of health, public health nurses, public health inspectors and medical infectious disease specialists.

This resource provides updated provincial guidelines for post-exposure management and prophylaxis for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and sexually transmitted infections. This guidance is for public health, workplace health and safety and other health professionals involved in the management of post-exposure prophylaxis for blood and bodily fluid exposures. The guidelines standardize blood and bodily fluid assessment of the transmission risk in exposures occurring in the non-occupational (community) and occupational settings.

Description

This strategic framework is meant to guide Alberta Health Services and community agencies in their work to reduce the incidence of sexually-transmitted and blood-borne infections in the province. The main goal of the framework is to enhance the health and wellness of all Albertans by preventing, reducing the risk, minimizing the impact and diminishing the stigma of sexually-transmitted infections and blood-borne infections. It provides guiding principles for six key action areas: prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, support and care, raising awareness and addressing stigma. The framework was created following discussions and work with more than 350 organizations during stakeholder engagements in the summer of 2016.

Screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea during pregnancy is one useful tool in preventing neonatal conjunctivitis in newborns. Current guidelines recommend testing in the first trimester for all women and repeat testing for high-risk women later in the pregnancy. This issue of Health Trends Alberta reviews the percentage of live births in 2013 and 2014 where the mother was tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea during pregnancy.
