Typically, the need for assessment and remediation will be triggered by law enforcement or another regulatory agency.

Researchers assessed how aware police officers are of opioid-related training and the emergency services available to them, and how officers believe those services might be improved. Funding for the study was provided by the OHS Futures Research Funding Program.

In June 2018 the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate released an investigative review examining the lives of twelve youth who died from opioid poisoning between October 2015 and September 2017. The review identified opportunities for system improvements in five areas, with five corresponding recommendations. All five recommendations have been accepted by the Government of Alberta, as outlined in this document.
