Intended for public health professionals, this resource presents the recommended practices for the management and reporting of West Nile virus as a notifiable disease. Topics covered include: a case definition of the disease; information on reporting requirements; disease etiology; clinical presentation; diagnosis; epidemiology; key investigation; case management and treatment; and preventive measures. The guidelines were developed by Alberta Health with input and advice from Medical Officers of Health, public health nurses, public health inspectors and medical infectious disease specialists.

Degree days are a measurement of heat accumulation. For the purpose of this report, Degree days are calculated by subtracting the threshold temperature for West Nile Virus development (14.3 degrees celcius) from the daily mean temperature. Calculating the cumulative degree days over a season can be used to estimate the risk of transmission of the West Nile Virus by mosquitoes in Alberta. The risk of transmission increases with increasing degree day accumulation. Updated every two weeks during the West Nile Virus season.

After initial introduction and spread in 2002 and 2003, West Nile virus (WNv) is now endemic in parts of the province, especially in south eastern Alberta. Clinicians will need to consider the possibility of WNv infection in their symptomatic patients each summer and fall. This information sheet describes the clinical features of WNv infection and is intended to assist clinicians in determining when WNv infection should be considered in a differential diagnosis and when testing for WNv infection should be considered.

Description

This report presents the results from the second West Nile virus (WNv) Seroprevalence Study, undertaken by Alberta Health and Wellness during March through June 2007. Since most WNv infections do not lead to clinical cases, seroprevalence studies are conducted to estimate how many Albertans have actually been infected with the virus and how the virus is spreading in the province. The studies also help to increase our understanding of the cycles of WNv to help predict yearly clinical infection rates. A secondary objective of the study is to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Albertans about WNv and about measures used to protect against infection.
