The annual report of the ministry of Health contains financial information of the ministry and a comparison of actual performance results to desired results set out in the ministry business plan, which was published as part of the previous year's budget. The report also includes financial statements for the entities making up the ministry and for which the minister is responsible.

Description

A review of Alberta’s emergency medical services dispatch system was conducted to identify opportunities to improve the system and provide recommendations on strategies to implement changes with the goal of improving patient outcomes. The review included a comparison of the Alberta Health Services dispatch model with nine comparable systems from other provinces and other countries, as well as internal and external stakeholder engagement. Alberta’s government will be accepting all recommendations and is working on a plan of action to carry them out.

Description

The Alberta EMS Provincial Advisory Committee was established on January 24, 2022 to explore issues facing the emergency medical services (EMS) system that may contribute to service pressures, gaps and human resource/workforce challenges. This included: examining ground ambulance, air ambulance and dispatch services; reviewing procedures and policies related to the delivery of EMS services; and identifying current and emerging issues that impact EMS delivery in Alberta. This final report presents the results of the committee's work, and presents over 50 recommendations to enhance the EMS system so that it is strong, sustainable and provides quality care for patients. Alberta’s government will be accepting all recommendations and is working on a plan of action to carry them out.

Alberta Health engaged Ernst & Young to perform a review of Alberta's response to COVID-19 and to facilitate the development of recommended priority actions that the health system should consider in order to build longer-term capacity and resilience. This report sets out specific actions to be considered by Alberta's health system and aggregated into an agreed-upon delivery plan by Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services. The review and action plan are structured around six themes: workforce; acute, critical care and surgery; primary and community care; governance and decision-making; public health; and modelling.

Presents findings of a study to complete a problem formulation for human health risks associated with surface water impacts after a wildfire. The main goal of the work was to better understand and assess potential human health risks from the Horse River Wildfire on surface water bodies that serve as drinking and recreational water sources and apply learnings to future wildfires. Five recommendations are provided, including a review of facilities in Alberta that are most susceptible to wildfire associated surface water risk and generation of a small suite of key indicator compounds to help notify water users of the wildfire related impacts to water.

The review included comprehensive engagement to gain insights and perspectives from senior health information management professionals, interested parties and end-users. This report presents the findings of the review and includes 14 recommendations representing opportunities to make proactive decisions to avoid future cost, risk and duplication, and progress towards a suggested future-state model. It includes an implementation roadmap sequenced to enable Alberta to manage and balance the pace of implementation within a fiscally-constrained environment and make informed decisions that will deliver patient-centric care and support Alberta's position as a digital health leader.

The review approach included hearing directly from Albertans, including patients, staff and physicians working in AHS, as well as from key stakeholder groups including patient advocates, regulatory bodies and associations, municipalities and universities.
