The Alberta Activity Index (AAX) closely tracks economic activity. Developed by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, it is a weighted average of nine monthly indicators (employment, average weekly earnings, retail trade, wholesale trade, manufacturing, new truck sales, housing starts, rigs drilling and oil production). Notes that the oil sands have replaced conventional crude oil as the major source of Alberta's oil production. In 2014, approximately 15 per cent of Alberta's total oil production was used by refineries within the province, 11 per cent was delivered to refineries in other parts of Canada, and 74 per cent was exported to U.S. markets. One in a series of fact sheets produced to give Albertans a basic knowledge of the royalty system and assist them in effectively participating in royalty review discussions.
