An implementation oversight committee was appointed to prioritize responses to previous recommendations for improving the child intervention system. It made recommendations to the Minister of Human Services in two progress reports, in April and August of 2014. In 2013, a 17-year-old youth in parental care died by suicide following attendance at a rural hospital for suicidal ideation. The Child and Youth Advocate Act investigated the death and released a review which made three recommendations regarding collaboration, assessments and working with suicidal youth. This report provides the response of the Ministry of Human Services to these three recommendations.

Description

In January 2014, the Minister of Human Services Minister announced a five-point plan for improving the child intervention system and an Implementation Oversight Committee (IOC) was appointed to oversee this work. Part of the IOC’s mandate was to prioritize responses to previous recommendations for improving the system, which came from a variety of sources, including the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate; the Alberta Child Intervention Review Panel; fatality inquiries; and the Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance. This report presents an independent assessment of the implementation status of some 67 previous recommendations, as identified by the IOC.
