These reports summarize the Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards status for Alberta’s air zones for ambient concentrations of fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulphur dioxide. These reports also summarizes the status of air quality in relation to the Air Quality Management Frameworks currently in place in Alberta: the Lower Athabasca AQMF supporting the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan and the South Saskatchewan AQMF supporting the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan.

Lists the percentage of hours for each year at a given air quality level, by municipality. The Air Quality Health Index is calculated based on the relative risks of a combination of common air pollutants that is known to harm human health. These pollutants are: ozone (O3) at ground level, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Risks are defined as follows: 1-3 High Quality; 4-6 Moderate Quality; 7-9 Low Quality; 10+ Very Low Quality.

Interpretation of the framework is supported by the companion Handbook for Assessing Regional Acid Deposition Exceedances, which also includes an updated critical load method for industrial regulatory applications within Alberta's air management system. This record also includes a document containing stakeholder comments on the original draft framework, and Environment and Parks' responses to these comments.

This technical handbook outlines a methodology for conducting regional/project-based acid deposition assessments using the revised acid deposition management framework [2022], which includes a new critical loads function and a steady-state mass balance approach to determine critical loads of acidity for sulphur and nitrogen deposition. The handbook should be utilized to determine suitable acid deposition assessments when required. It has a companion tool and GIS package that can be used to calculate exceedances as per Section 3 of the handbook.
