Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This dataset consists of previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data for which the quality has been assessed in order to apply a quality-weighting approach prior to modelling the bedrock topography surface. It is the data used to produce AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta. Explanatory notes, references, and data sources appear on a supplementary page to accompany Map 602. These notes describe the distribution of physiographic terrain elements of the bedrock surface across Alberta, and the sources and quality of the data that were used to interpolate this surface.

Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This grid is a computer-generated geostatistical model of the bedrock topography of Alberta using previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data. The quality of this data has been assessed and then a quality-weighting approach was applied to the dataset prior to interpolation. The surface was modelled using a 500m x 500m grid cell spacing, and as such should not be used for local scale studies. This grid represents the surface portrayed in AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, and this grid will continue to be updated as part of the Alberta Geological Framework project. This digital dataset is the compilation of an analysis of the in situ stress regime in several regions of Alberta and northeastern British Columbia conducted by Dr. Sebastian Bell under a contract with the Alberta Geological Survey from 1999 to 2004. The dataset includes both new and previously published estimates for vertical stress gradients, minimum horizontal stress gradients, and stress orientation. Understanding the state of stress in the subsurface has always been important in the development of energy resources. The recent development of unconventional oil sand and low permeability hydrocarbon deposits, waste fluid disposal, greenhouse gas sequestration, and potential geothermal energy extraction all require knowledge of the state of stress to operate safely and economically. Description

This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta tiled into one layer. It was an interim product to produce the generalized polygon dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0002), which is suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. We prepared the data by appending existing GIS datasets of each surficial map of Alberta into one provincial layer with a standard attribute table. Data sources included published Alberta Geological Survey and Geological Survey of Canada maps, one master's thesis, and ecological (biophysical) land-classification maps of the mountain parks. When possible, we transferred all of the legend data from each map source into the standard schema. As part of our 1:1,000,000-scale map project, we completed mapping the unmapped areas of Alberta at roughly 500,000 to 1,000,000 scale. This dataset includes those previously unpublished data. Description

This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta, edited for mapping continuity and generalized to make it suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. It is the dataset used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 601: Surficial Geology of Alberta. The data were prepared from an intermediate dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0001), which was edgematched and then the boundaries between similar polygons were 'dissolved.' The residual dataset was then generalized selectively using the Geological Survey of Canada's GeoScaler software. We then added attributes describing the generalized polygons, including unit description, texture, genetic group, and geological age. The data were created as an Esri file geodatabase feature class and exported for public distribution as an Esri shapefile called Surf1M_py_ll.shp. The layer file Surf1M_py_ll.lyr is also included for the convenience of Esri software users (version 9.2).

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the formations that comprise the Beaverhill Lake Group (Townships 29 to 113, Ranges 1W4 to 13W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. The dataset also includes picks for the underlying Elk Point Group, and the overlying Woodbend Group. Lithostratigraphic picks for the Beaverhill Lake Group include the Fort Vermilion Formation, the Swan Hills Formation, the Slave Point Formation, and the Waterways Formation (top of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the underlying Elk Point Group include the Prairie Evaporite Formation, the Sulphur Point Formation, and the Watt Mountain Formation (base of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the overlying Woodbend Group include the Cooking Lake Formation, or its equivalent.

Since its inception in 1920, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has drilled several thousand boreholes across the province. Most were drilled only into the unconsolidated sediments overlying the top of bedrock. In 2010, AGS staff began a project to systematically compile all of the borehole log information into a database. This Digital Data product and its companion Open File Report, OFR 2014-06 are the interim results of this initiative. The dataset comprises three tables: Sources.txt, Boreholes.txt and Intervals.txt, as well as metadata. The Sources table gives summary information about the AGS project for which each borehole was drilled. The Boreholes table gives summary information about each borehole, such as location, drilling method, date, and total depth of the hole. The Intervals table gives descriptive geological information about each distinct geological horizon encountered in the borehole, including lithology and colour of the material. The source datasets include the digitized Alberta Research Council (ARC) Hydrogeology Map Series, the AGS Springs of Alberta report, ARC water chemistry data, Groundwater Resources Information Services (GWRIS) Index, Alberta Environmental Protection (AEP) springs, AGS Northeastern Alberta (NEALTA) project springs, field work conducted by Dr. J. This GIS dataset portrays the distribution of glacial landforms in Alberta, based on the compilation of existing government survey mapping and research literature, supplemented by new analysis of remote sensing data. It is the dataset that was used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 604 (Glacial Landforms of Alberta) using an intermediate step of reducing the density of closely spaced line segments to make the features suitable for map production at 1:1 000 000 scale. This dataset contains the original line features without any cartographic generalization. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.
