A diversion from the Red Deer River to raise the water level in Buffalo Lake began in Spring 1996. Water quality monitoring has been conducted to ensure the project does not lead to the degradation of water quality in the lake with the diversion in place. This wildlife status report looks at the red-tailed chipmunk, a small rodents that are found in the montane and subalpine regions of Waterton Lakes National Park and the West Castle Valley. There are two recognized subspecies of red-tailed chipmunks and southwestern Alberta is the northern range limit of one of these subspecies. Populations of both subspecies are probably secure on a continental basis, but they may be vulnerable to declines in the northern portions of their ranges. At higher concentrations, ground-level ozone has adverse human health effects, and is one of the most damaging air pollutants to vegetation. In Canada, federal, provincial and territorial governments are in the process of reviewing ambient national objectives as well as setting new Canada-wide standards for ozone. Available ambient ozone monitoring information from Alberta has been reviewed, and government agencies, industries and associations involved in monitoring ozone and its precursors have been identified. Also, published literature from Alberta after 1980 has been reviewed.
