Presents the findings of a research project on lentil storage. The objectives of this project were to determine the change in quality of lentils stored both in steel bins and in various controlled lab conditions, and to provide useful guide lines to lentil producers on improving the storage life of lentils.

Pulse crop production is a growing industry in the Prairie provinces. These crops are much more susceptible to damage than most cereals and other grains. Therefore, it is very important to use conveying equipment that minimizes damage to these crops. Four unique conveyors were tested and the characteristics of paddle conveyors, belt conveyors, and bristle flighting were compared to the traditional steel flighting used in existing augers. This update provides a summary of the results.

Reports on the findings of a 1988 research project to widen the industry's knowledge of round bale preservation systems. The objectives of the project were to measure change of quantity and quality of round bales stored using wrapped storage systems and traditional storage systems, and to evaluate the functional performance of two bale wrappers and one silage bagger. Under the conditions during the testing, no economic advantage was realized in wrapping round bales with plastic.

The practical field application of a floating cutterbar mounted to a windrower, for harvesting certain problem crops, is investigated. Use of a floating cutterbar reduced losses by 50 per cent in solid seeded soybeans and lentils when compared to conventional windrowers. Functional performance was best in dry soil; flotation was found to be inadequate in wet soil.
