Recognizing the diversity of industrial activity on the landscape, this document is intended to provide government regulatory agencies and industry with a comprehensive set of principles and guidelines for all industrial activity in native grassland landscapes. Many of the principles are requirements for development on public lands, as stated in the standards and conditions of public lands formal dispositions, authorizations and approvals. These principles and guidelines are also appropriate and applicable to other land holders for the promotion and advancement of avoidance and minimal disturbance practices.

Landowners have specific rights with regard to seismic operations. The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) has prepared this publication to provide information in response to questions about seismic activity. It is important to note that a seismic operator may enter onto deeded property only after obtaining consent of the owner of the land or a person authorized by the owner to give that consent. The exception to this, is for geophysical operations associated with carbon capture and storage developments and is addressed later in the document. No other government agency has the authority to grant access for seismic operations on deeded land. Therefore, it is entirely up to the landowner to negotiate the specific terms of the contract to ensure that his/her interests are protected.

Administration of public lands includes controlling rights of access, surface rights and subsurface rights, or mineral rights. Public lands are administered for all Albertans through the issuance of dispositions. A disposition must be obtained for any access to or activity on public lands. Applicants for a disposition must submit the appropriate plan type that meets the requirements for the activity and purpose of the disposition being applied for. Disposition plans submitted digitally, and digital plan submissions are to be appropriately geo-referenced.

The manual describes the procedures used and the attribute data captured during the project. It also provides users of the database some background information on the mapping systems used during the compilation of the soils database.
