Describes the field protocols and methods for the measurement of precipitation using the OTT Pluvio precipitation gauge. These protocols are important to ensure that data are collected consistently and the data obtained are accurate and scientifically sound. The information that is gathered is critical for flood forecasting and water supply, the accurate prediction of runoff, long-term hydrological analysis, agricultural insurance assessment, and to assist in the operation of reservoirs and hydroelectric facilities in Alberta.

Riparian areas consist of the lands adjacent to streams, rivers, wetlands and lakes that are strongly influenced by the presence of water. They are often distinct from the surrounding landscape as the vegetation growth is very lush. These areas form a transition between dry land and open water and are characterized by the presence of hydrophilic vegetation and specific soil types. Riparian areas are usually very productive in terms of biomass and form critical wildlife habitat. These areas often have standing water and are subjected to periodic flooding when high water levels fill the stream channel to the top of the bank. The Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) and regulations include manure management requirements for all livestock operations in Alberta. Producers using seasonal feeding and bedding sites (wintering sites), where livestock are fed and sheltered over the winter, must follow these regulations. Livestock corrals must also be managed according to the same requirements. Under AOPA, all livestock producers are expected to follow the setbacks required from common bodies of water when locating wintering sites and livestock corrals. This practice will help minimize the risk of contaminated runoff potentially affecting the water quality of common water bodies.

Description

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for crop growth. Alberta soils are generally deficient or low in phosphorus for optimum crop production (<60 ppm). Successful crop production requires the addition of phosphorus in the form of fertilizer or manure. However, the loss of phosphorus from the landscape can negatively impact water quality. Phosphorus can move with eroded soil or be dissolved in runoff water and carried to nearby surface water bodies. Too much phosphorus in lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams can speed up aquatic plant and algae growth. This process is called eutrophication, which can lead to oxygen depletion, release of toxins, degraded water quality, fish deaths and odours. When Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) are used in the management of phosphorus, losses are minimized and crops receive maximum benefit.
