Surveys are conducted from early-August to mid-September when the colour of pine trees killed by mountain pine beetles during the previous year makes them distinguishable from older mountain pine beetle-killed pine trees. The aerial survey area typically covers areas where mountain pine beetle populations are actively killing trees in susceptible pine forests.
