Triticale is a human-made crop developed by crossing rye (Secale cereale L.) and common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or durum (T. turgidum L.). It is an attractive crop for use as a feed grain, cereal silage or a biofuel feedstock due to greater grain yield potential, weed competitiveness and tolerance to drought and pests, more so than its ancestral species.

SWSW and CPS wheat are attractive crops for biofuel production due to the higher grain yield potential, weed competitiveness and starch content. From 2009 to 2012, field plot studies were conducted at five different soil zone/agro-ecological locations (Dark Brown, Thin Black – south, Thin Black – central, Black and Gray soil zones) in Alberta, with a focus on the Parkland Region. The study showed that SWSW and CPS wheat types can be grown successfully under dryland conditions in southern and central Alberta.

Canadian hard red and durum wheats have long been recognized as premium quality grains by the milling and pasta industries. This quality is due primarily to the protein component of the grain. The protein premiums offered on these classes of wheat show how each increase in protein level leads to better returns for the producer (see Table 1). Protein premiums are paid on 0.1 per cent increments, but only selective (0.5 per cent) increments are given to illustrate the premiums.

Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is thought to have originated in central and western China from a wild Asian species Fagropyrum cymosum. It has been cultivated in China for over 1,000 years, and was brought to Europe during the Middle Ages. Buckwheat, as well as other grain species, accompanied the colonists to the New World. The Scots coined the word ìbuckwheatî from two AngloSaxon terms, boc(beech) and whoet(wheat). The word beech was used since the fruit of the plant was similar to that of beechnut. It was called wheat because the grain of buckwheat was used in the same way as wheat. This term is somewhat ironic since buckwheat does not belong to the grass family and is not considered a "true" cereal.

Description

Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) is a man-made crop developed by crossing wheat (Triticum turgidum or Triticum aestivum) with rye (Secale cereale). Early attempts to cross wheat and rye produced only sterile offspring. It was not until the 1930s that techniques were available to produce fertile hybrids. Once this step was accomplished, it was possible to develop new combinations between wheat and rye as well as direct combinations between triticales with differing wheat and rye parents. Consequently, new varieties of winter or spring triticale can be developed with the same methods used for breeding other cereal crops. In 1953, the University of Manitoba began the first North American triticale breeding program. Early breeding efforts concentrated on developing a high yielding, drought tolerant human food crop species suitable for marginal wheat producing areas. Generally, direct seeding proved to be quite successful in establishing winter wheat. In most years, germination and emergence of winter wheat was superior on direct seeded plots over conventionally tilled plots. This outcome was the result of improved seedbed soil moisture and more uniform seedbed in the undisturbed soil. Results showed that nitrogen fertilizer can be successfully applied in the fall without reducing winter wheat survival. Applying all nitrogen fertilizer at the time of seeding in the fall is more effective than broadcasting all N fertilizer in the spring. Also, using a split application strategy can work reasonably well. This option is to apply a portion of the N fertilizer at the time of seeding, then broadcast the remaining N in the spring using ammonium nitrate fertilizer
