Description

Locations of uraniferous boulder-fields and uraniferous swamps extracted from industry assessment reports are useful metallogenetic indicators for uranium exploration within and around the Athabasca Basin. They are used as pathfinders to uranium occurrences and prospects. These locations along the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta have been compiled in GIS format and delivered as a point shapefile. In Alberta, the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin and the regolith underlying the Athabasca unconformity are locally exposed along the northern shore of Lake Athabasca. Extensive uranium exploration work in the 1970s, including scintillometer prospecting traverses, geological mapping, airborne and ground geophysics, and drilling, have documented several uraniferous outcrops with scintillometer readings of up to 10 000 counts per second, and uraniferous boulders and boulder trains with radioactivity up to two orders of magnitude higher than the background. Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This grid is a computer-generated geostatistical model of the bedrock topography of Alberta using previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data. The quality of this data has been assessed and then a quality-weighting approach was applied to the dataset prior to interpolation. The surface was modelled using a 500m x 500m grid cell spacing, and as such should not be used for local scale studies. This grid represents the surface portrayed in AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, and this grid will continue to be updated as part of the Alberta Geological Framework project. This dataset (lineaments_ln_ll.shp) comprises structural features compiled into GIS format from existing literature, published up to 2003. The data represent fault/lineament locations known or inferred in the Alberta Plains. We have chosen to digitize and publish all lineaments from source maps even where they extended beyond the Alberta boundary. Each compiled feature is characterized by a set of attributes including: affected formations (oldest affected and oldest non-affected stratigraphic unit), fault type, fault sense of displacement, evidence used to infer the fault/lineament, original reference information and publication scale, and an estimate of the georeferencing error. The completeness of the captured attribute set varies for each feature as a function of the level of detail in the source article. The data set should be used cautiously. Attributes include study level, material description, references, area, sand and gravel thickness, and gravel and sand volumes. In 2009, data from newly mapped area NTS 83N/NE were added.

Description

This data set comprises the bedrock geology of Alberta in geographic information systems (GIS) format. The GIS coverage was originally prepared by digitizing Map 027, 1972, Alberta Geological Survey, Alberta Research Council. Revisions since 1972 have incorporated new mapping data from work by the Alberta Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Canada, and by the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists through the contribution of its membership to the Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The coverage shows the formation and geologic age of the bedrock subcrop, as well as the nature of the contacts between formations. GIS files are distributed as shapefiles of bedrock polygons (geol_py_ll.shp), bedrock line features (bdrk_ln_ll.shp), and bedrock contacts (geol_ln_ll.shp).

This dataset is a GIS version of part of Map 227, which is a regional synthesis of various published and unpublished maps. The data represent drift isopachs for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. The interpretation of the remaining northern portion of the province was based mostly on limited borehole data and information from existing 1:250,000 hydrogeological maps. The exposed areas represent areas where drift is absent or thin and discontinuous. Contour intervals are irregular and depend on local data density.
