Obesity has been called an epidemic in Canada. It is identified as a risk factor for a large number of chronic diseases, and is therefore extremely costly to Canadians and the health care system. This report presents data from national health surveys and linked provincial administrative databases on obesity trends amongst Albertans and the expected impact of these trends. It also includes technical discussions of the measurement of childhood obesity, the relationship between obesity and specific chronic diseases, and general cost benefit considerations for interventions in persons with severe obesity.
