In 2008, Alberta Environment adopted a management framework for the Muskeg River watershed. The management framework defines criteria for evaluation of water quantity and water quality in the Muskeg River watershed. Observed conditions are compared against scientifically established limits that have been developed specifically for the Muskeg River Watershed. These limits are based on data collected within the watershed, as well as more broad information on streamflow, water quality and requirements of the aquatic ecosystem. One of the key recommendations of the management framework was the development of an integrated monitoring program for the Muskeg River watershed to coordinate offlease monitoring activities that are currently conducted by individual companies and Alberta Environment. This protocol quantifies decreases in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the raising of beef cattle by reducing the number of days required to get a feeder calf from birth to harvest. This applies to youthful cattle, or those cattle under 24 months of age. In this context, feeder cattle that spend less time in backgrounding lots, on pasture and in the feedlot result in decreased greenhouse gas emissions. Withdrawn as of March 31, 2020.

This synthesis report builds on information generated during the Northern River Basins Study. It presents information from the Northern River Ecosystem Initiative to give a new benchmark on the present health of the northern river basins. The report also provides an update on development in the basins, and describes initiatives, policies, partnerships, regulations, monitoring, research and other programs implemented to protect the environment. Results of more than 20 scientific projects undertaken during the five-year study are summarized, and a discussion and conclusions about what has been learned is presented.

The Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative (NREI) was a five-year endeavor by the governments of Canada, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories to address commitments made by the three governments in response to the preceding Northern River Basins Study (NRBS). The NRBS was itself a five-year initiative to obtain information regarding the existing conditions in, and the effects of development on, the aquatic ecosystem of the Peace-Athabasca-Slave river basins. The NREI involved scientists and resource managers from governments, universities, industry, and other organizations. Highlights of their actions are included in this report, with further detail available in various technical science reports.

The governments of Canada, Alberta and the Northwest Territories established the Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative to answer questions and address recommendations from the Northern River Basins Study, which took place between 1992 and 1996. The initiative was a science-based effort to gain more information to help understand the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems in this region of Canada's north. This resource provides a general summary of the findings of the initiative. It also included are references to other studies and monitoring programs done during these years.

This report examines plant species used in reclamation and their tolerances for soil salinity, sodicity and pH. The information for each species was obtained from a review of the literature and unpublished information conveyed through personal interviews with people conducting research in this area or working in reclamation. The objective of this report is to determine if the current values for soil salinity, sodicity and pH need to be revised to reflect plant species' tolerances for these soil parameters. The results indicate that the current values used for soil salinity, sodicity and pH should not be changed at this time.

These reference areas were established in 1963 on glacialfluvial terraces and a colluvial slope adjacent to the Red Deer and Upper James River. These reference areas were classified as belonging to the Rough fescue-Hairy wildrye community type and placed in the grassland/shrubland ecosite of the Upper Foothills subregion.
