Description

This dataset provides the point locations of horse bands as they were observed during annual aerial surveys. Equine Management Zones are surveyed using a helicopter and horses observed on the landscape during minimum count surveys are reported. Data is stored in file geodatabase, feature class format with associated attributes, meaning each point has a number of horses observed and age class. This dataset simply reports the horses counted on the landscape at one snapshot in time. This data also depicts the flight track flown during the annual aerial minimum counts. Surveys are flown by helicopter once per year when suitable conditions permit. Areas are typically flown by grid pattern within high density areas and over known horse locations. Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) jointly developed a Landscape Connectivity indicator for the province of Alberta. An Equivalent Connected Area index was selected to measure landscape connectivity and assess changes in connectivity over time. The indicator accounts for three broad land cover types: Upland Forests, Lowland Forests and Grasslands. Landscape connectivity for the three land cover types, and an aggregated value, were calculated for all Hydrological Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 using four GIS layers: the Human Footprint Inventories and the Wall-to-Wall Vegetation Layer Including “Backfilled” Vegetation created and maintained by the ABMI. the wildlife crossing locations in National Parks provided by Parks Canada, and the Hierarchical Watershed Boundaries created and maintained by the Government of Alberta. GIS line work representing provincial park/protected area boundaries has been interpreted from written legal descriptions appended to Orders-in-Council granted Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. In case of discrepancy between the GIS data and the written legal description, the written legal description shall take precedence. The Government of Canada is the authoritative source for GIS boundaries of National Parks. National Park boundaries are included herein for reference, only. Aerial surveys are cost-effective means of obtaining forest health damaging agent (FHDA) caused disturbance data at the landscape level. The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, MPB) is native to western Canada. It attacks all pine including lodgepole, limber, whitebark and jack pine. Over the past 40 years the range of mountain pine beetle has expanded, possibly due to changes in the area of climatically suitable habitat. Known Limitations: The areas surveyed each year can be different and therefore year over year comparisons may be difficult. the surveyors do not do ground truthing for all disturbances identified, therefore it is not guaranteed that all of the disturbances are caused by MPB. the surveyors do not necessarily map tree patches less than three red trees and therefore the dataset may not include all MPB killed trees. 'grey' attacked trees are not captured. the surveyors attempt to distinguish between 'new' faders and 'old' faders but the accuracy of this distinction is not guaranteed and therefore the data may reflect several years and several generations of MPB attack. The Historical Municipal Landfills dataset is a spatial representation of the locations of historic landfills in the province of Alberta. The data was originally captured in a 1982 survey conducted by MacLaren Plansearch Lavalin where counties within Alberta were asked to identify the quarter section that landfills were located in. MacLaren ranked the results of the survey categorizing landfill locations based on their potential risk for environmental and human health impacts. In 1985 Associated Engineering did an evaluation of a selection of sites which MacLaren had ranked as having the greatest potential risk and identified them on hardcopy aerial photographs. A subset of the remaining landfills in the MacLaren report were located on historic aerial photographs as part of an Alberta Environment and Protected Areas project where the footprint of the landfill was digitized.
